Government of Canada Supports the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company

SASKATOON, August 8, 2005 -- Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament (Wascana), Ralph Goodale, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $100,000 in funding for the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company. The funds will enable the organization to launch a new program to help Aboriginal artists perfect their talent.

"Aboriginal culture is rich in ancestral customs and traditions that are unique in the world," said Minister Goodale. "This multi-disciplinary arts training program will enable a greater number of Aboriginal artists to pursue a career in the arts."

"By providing professional training to a new generation of Aboriginal artists, we are ensuring that the age-old cultures that define our identity are preserved and shared," said Minister Frulla. "I am proud to support the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company in its efforts to ensure that Aboriginal artists can continue their quest for artistic excellence."

The new professional artistic training program at the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company seeks to train versatile and highly qualified Aboriginal artists who will be able to work in arts organizations both nationally and internationally. This program will also provide a career management service.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its National Arts Training Contribution Program. This program supports non-profit organizations that train Canadians pursuing a national or international professional career in the arts. Currently, 39 institutions throughout the country receive financial support under this program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
