Government of Canada Supports Alberta's Cultural Presence on the Internet

EDMONTON, August 11, 2005 -- While visiting the University of Alberta, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced funding for two cultural new media projects.

The University of Alberta Libraries will receive $268,665 to digitize a collection that includes many rare books. This will enable Canadians and other virtual visitors to gain access to important literature of the Prairie Provinces written before 1953. The Heritage Community Foundation will receive $175,101 to create an online collection that will provide information about the culture and traditions of the Franco-Albertan community.

"These projects clearly illustrate the Government of Canada's desire to enable the greatest possible number of people to become familiar with our country's history through the Internet," said Minister Frulla.

The University of Alberta Libraries' project will include 1800 rare books, three unique French-language newspapers, and 10 essays from the Canadian Aboriginal Youth Writing Challenge. There will also be an array of educational resources designed for young people. The Heritage Community Foundation's project will highlight the history of Alberta's Francophone community.

"The Internet is also an unparalleled channel for making our culture accessible to all. We are proud to work with partners like the University of Alberta Libraries and the Heritage Community Foundation to do just that," added Minister Frulla.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online strategy, which encourages a uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
