Government of Canada Supports MacLaren Art Centre

BARRIE, August 17, 2005 -- Minister of International Cooperation and Member of Parliament (Barrie) Aileen Carroll, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $26,500 in funding for the MacLaren Art Centre. The funds will enable the Centre to develop a plan for storing its permanent collection. The Centre will also consider how to adapt the existing space to meet current storage needs and accommodate modest future growth.

"Art centres play a vital role in the preservation and promotion of Canadian culture," said Minister Carroll. "The Government of Canada is pleased to support this project, which will assist the MacLaren Art Centre in its efforts to create a secure environment for its collections."

"The Government of Canada is proud to help the MacLaren Art Centre protect its collections," said Minister Frulla. "Thanks to this initiative, future generations will have access to our cultural treasures."

Founded in 1988, the MacLaren Art Centre maintains a permanent collection that reflects the breadth, diversity, and quality of the visual arts in Canada. The Art Centre's reputation lies in its innovative programming. Attendance now exceeds 50,000 visitors per year.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program ($10,000) and the Capacity Building component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program ($16,500).

The Museums Assistance Program provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to our collective heritage. The Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations throughout local Canadian communities.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
