Government of Canada Supports Black Theatre Workshop's Training Program

MONTRÉAL, August 30, 2005 -- President of the Privy Council, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, and Member of Parliament (Westmount-Ville Marie) Lucienne Robillard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $40,000 in funding for the Black Theatre Workshop. Funding will enable this theatre company to continue to hold its YouthWorks training program.

"We need to ensure that the voices of all Canadians are heard, whether through literature, film, or live theatrical performances," said Minister Robillard. "That is why the work of the Black Theatre Workshop is so important and why we support the training of these young actors."

"Providing training for young aspiring artists builds a foundation for the future of Canadian culture," said Minister Frulla. "The Black Theatre Workshop produces highly trained graduates who enrich the diversity of Canadian society and are capable of being artistic leaders."

The Black Theatre Workshop provides a three-week intensive theatre training summer program for up to 15 students. Approximately half of the students are then invited to join a training troupe and continue to develop their skills over a three-year period. The program helps bring the stories of Black young people to Montréal audiences. Young people who train over two or three summers are equipped to consider careers or further professional training in the arts.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its National Arts Training Contribution Program. This program supports non-profit organizations that train Canadians pursuing a national or international professional career in the arts. Currently, 39 institutions throughout the country receive financial support under this program.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
