| RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, August 29, 2005 -- Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament (Outremont) Jean-C. Lapierre, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $417,906 in funding for the Centre d'animation et de diffusion culturelles du Bas-Saint-Laurent. The funds will help this museum to hold two major exhibitions in several Canadian cities. "Our museums educate the young and young at heart on our country and preserve our shared cultural treasures," said Minister Lapierre. "I am pleased that this great Lower Saint Lawrence organization will benefit from Government of Canada support and enable more Canadians to have access to its collections." "Museums serve as guardians of our collective heritage and increase Canadians' awareness of the magnificent history they are heirs to," said Minister Frulla. "We must support the efforts of institutions like this one today, which are vitally concerned with preserving and exhibiting objects of great value." The Centre d'animation et de diffusion culturelles du Bas-Saint-Laurent will organize two travelling exhibitions across Canada by well-known Canadian artists. The first exhibition, Tout Lemonde, features a collection of paintings by Serge Lemonde, an influential artist in pop art and photorealism. The second, Fernand Toupin, Surveyor of wide spaces painting of 1953-2000, is the work of a prolific visual artist whose art is characterized by diversity in pictorial interests. Another portion of the funding will enable this Lower Saint Lawrence museum to create an integrated business plan to ensure its expansion. Of the total amount, financial assistance of $267,906 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program. The program seeks to help Canadian museums and related institutions undertake projects that foster excellence and facilitate access to our national heritage. The remaining $150,000 is provided through the Capacity Building Component for Arts Organizations of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP). The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
