Macaulay Announces $3.9 Million for a Major Harbour Project at Launching Pond in Prince Edward Island

august 17, 2005

Montague, Prince Edward Island. – Lawrence MacAulay, Member of Parliament for Cardigan, announced today on behalf of Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will provide funding in the amount of $3.9 million for work at Launching Pond in Prince Edward Island.

"The federal government knows how important Launching Pond is to the economy of Kings County," said Mr. MacAulay. "That is why we are providing additional funding in order to speed up implementation of the Launching Pond project.’

Already scheduled for Launching Pond this summer was final preparatory work for a large, future harbour improvement project involving reconstruction and extension of the entrance breakwaters. The additional funding means that actual construction work on the project will start this year. The work is the first phase of the project and will involve improvements to the north entrance breakwater. When completed, the breakwater will be repaired and strengthened with the addition of 8,500 tons of armourstone.

These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Harbour Authority of Launching Pond, which manages and operates the facility for local users. Such close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
