Government of Canada Supports Research and Development in New Aerospace Electric Power TechnologiesMISSISSAUGA, Ontario, August 31, 2005 — The Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for Mississauga East-Cooksville, on behalf of the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, today announced a $9.4-million investment that will generate innovations in aerospace electric power technologies.
As part of a $31.4-million project being undertaken by Mississauga-based Honeywell Canada, this Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) investment targets the development of advanced technologies for secondary electric power distribution for aircraft requirements.
"The successful development of such leading-edge technologies will contribute to Canada's smart economy, which translates into high-quality jobs and a better standard of living for all Canadians," said Minister Emerson.
"This project responds to the emerging electric power requirements of new aircraft platforms, thereby demonstrating the federal government's commitment to a thriving aerospace and defence industry — a critical segment of Canada's economy," said Minister Guarnieri.
This project will generate innovations that will lay the foundation for the next generation of the company's electric power technologies. This research and development is critical to determining future technology options. It builds upon previous research and development for commercial and military aircraft programs.
Technology Partnerships Canada is a key instrument for advancing research and development toward commercialization. Working in partnership with innovative companies across Canada, TPC shares in the cost of private sector technology projects in aerospace and defence, in environmental technologies, and in enabling technologies such as information and communications technologies, and biotechnology.

Secondary Electric Power Distribution Technologies Project
Honeywell Canada will receive a $9.4-million investment from Technology Partnerships Canada. The investment is part of a $31.4-million project being undertaken to develop advanced technologies for secondary electric power distribution (SEPD) systems.
This research and development effort will develop, test and confirm some strategic pre-competitive technology initiatives to advance the company's capabilities in electric power systems as well as power distribution and power conversion technologies.
The project increases Honeywell Canada's knowledge of emerging technologies, including software, hardware and advanced system monitoring.
SEPD technologies in this project focus on components, sub-systems and systems with high-performance electrical load capabilities, advanced electrical load configurations, and innovative alternating current and direct current technologies. Typically, SEPD systems support electrical loads located in the aircraft cabin (i.e. lights, utilities), cargo compartments (i.e. doors, conveyors, lights) and some auxiliary technical loads (i.e. pumps, fans, actuators, lights).
This project supports Honeywell Canada's participation in emerging aircraft programs with advanced electric power requirements. As a major supplier of aerospace systems, Honeywell Canada is a key integrator of components manufactured by numerous small companies in the Canadian aerospace sector.
Honeywell Canada employs 5000 people across Canada, including 1058 at its Mississauga aerospace facility. It is estimated that the project will create 196 jobs over the work phase, and 90 jobs during the multi-year benefits phase.
