Fines levied for crab, cod violations

Harbour Grace: Convictions for overrunning crab and cod quotas have resulted in significant fines for east coast fishers.

Quinn North of Bay De Verde appeared in provincial court in Harbour Grace and was convicted of exceeding his crab quota in the midshore, and his total quota.

Mr. Quinn was fined $1,200 for exceeding his midshore quota by 2,827lbs, and $1,200 for exceeding his overall quota by 1,256lbs. He was also fined $3,330, which represented the value of his quota overrun, for a total fine of $5,730.

Fred Barrett Jr. of Old Perlican, Trinity Bay has been fined $6,017 for two counts of failing to comply with a condition of his crab fishing licence by exceeding the amount of crab he could harvest. Mr. Barrett was fined $1,500, and $4,517 for the value of his overrun of 1,829.

Raymond Barrett of Old Perlican was the designated skipper for Fred Barrett for the 2004 season, and was fined $200.

In each case the violations were detected by DFO Statistics personnel conducting their annual reviews of catch data.

Brian Lewis of St. Shotts was convicted in St. John’s Provincial Court of exceeding his overall crab quota for 2004. He was fined $4,800, which included a deterrent fine of $1,500 and a fine of $3,300 which represented the value of the overrun.

Clem Cochrane of St. Brides was fined $796 for exceeding his 2004 cod IQ. The fine represented the value of the 1,106lbs of cod that he was over his quota.
