Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of the Honourable James Alexander Jerome, former Speaker of the House of Commons

August 21, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement:

“I was saddened to learn of the death of the Honourable James Alexander Jerome, former Speaker of the House of Commons from 1974-1979 and former Member of Parliament for Sudbury, Ontario.

James Jerome was a dedicated and extremely able Parliamentarian, representing his Sudbury riding from 1968-1980, a period which included majority and minority governments.

A lawyer by training, his formidable grasp of parliamentary procedure made him an excellent committee chairman, highly respected by both sides of the House.  These qualities, along with a richly deserved reputation for impartiality in the chair, made him an effective and admired Speaker of the House of Commons.  As proof of the esteem in which he was held, he was the first member of an opposition party chosen to preside over the House.

James Jerome brought more than competence and impartiality to his duties as Speaker.  He also brought dignity, an abiding respect for rules and traditions, and a deep commitment to Parliament as a fundamental institution of Canadian democracy.  He served his constituents’ interests with energy and devotion during his 12 years as a Member of Parliament.

On behalf of Canadians, I would like to offer my condolences to his wife, Barry, and his children Mary Lou, Paul, Jim Jr. and Megan, on the passing of a fine, dedicated Canadian who gave so much to Parliament and to our country.”
