CONTRACT AWARDED FOR
REHABILITATION WORK AT WABUSH AIRPORT

WABUSH, NL -- Todd Russell, MP for Labrador, on behalf of Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre, today announced that a contract has been awarded for improvements at Wabush Airport. A $1,060,060 contract has been awarded to H. J. O’Connell Construction Ltd. of Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador, to rehabilitate the airport’s apron, taxiways A and B, and groundside pavement.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the important role that Wabush Airport plays in the transportation system of western Labrador and has invested significantly in the Airport over the last several years," said Mr. Lapierre. "This capital investment will ensure that the Wabush Airport remains a modern facility."

The rehabilitation work for the apron and taxiways will involve a total asphalt area of 37,700 square metres. The groundside pavement improvements will include the front area of the Terminal Building, the access road, rent-a-car area, public parking area and freight pick-up and delivery area.

"These additional enhancements are welcome news and will ensure the continued safety of Wabush Airport while also contributing to its economic potential," said Mr. Russell. "This is another example of the Government of Canada's commitment to the people of Labrador West and to meeting the transportation needs of Labrador."

Over the last five years Transport Canada has invested over $4 million dollars in the Wabush Airport. In addition to the work announced today, improvements have been made to the high and low intensity approach lighting systems, as well as to the air terminal building to ensure that national building and fire code regulations were met. Also, investments have been made in new snow clearing equipment and fencing, as well as in environmental remediation work, which involved the removal of all out-of-service storage tanks and the excavation and treatment of soil.

While in Wabush, Mr. Russell also confirmed Minister Lapierre’s decision that the management and operation of Wabush Airport will remain the responsibility of Transport Canada. Under the National Airports Policy, Wabush Airport was designated as a regional/local airport and as such had been identified for divestiture to local management.
