CONTRACT AWARDED FOR
ELECTRICAL UPGRADES AT PORT HARDY AIRPORT

Port Hardy, B.C. - David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and co-Senior Minister Responsible for British Columbia, on behalf of Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre, today announced that an $834,567 contract has been awarded to Signal Electric Limited, of Sidney, B.C., to carry out various electrical upgrades at the Port Hardy Airport.

"The Government of Canada recognizes the important role that the Port Hardy Airport plays in the transportation system of British Columbia and has invested in the airport over the last several years," said Mr. Lapierre. "The capital investment announced today will ensure that the Port Hardy Airport remains a modern facility."

Signal Electric will install new edge lighting on Runway 11/29, Taxiways A and B, and on the Apron. Approach lighting for Runway 11/29 will be installed, as well, the Airfield lighting control panel and Airfield lighting regulators will be replaced.

"Today's contribution is an example of infrastructure resources being directed to where they are most needed to enhance the safety and economic potential of the Port Hardy Airport," said Mr. Emerson. "This is another example of the Government of Canada's commitment to the people of British Columbia and to meeting the transportation needs of all Canadians."

Port Hardy Airport receives regularly scheduled traffic from Pacific Coastal Airlines, Northern Hawk Aviation and Eagle Air Services Inc. West Coast Helicopters operates charters to/from the airport. With today’s announcement, Transport Canada has invested over $1.6 million in the Port Hardy Airport over the last five years. Under the National Airports Policy, Port Hardy Airport is designated as a regional/local airport and as such has been identified for divestiture to local interests.
