EXPANSION OF APRON AND NEW
TERMINAL AT KUUJJUAQ AIRPORT
KUUJJUAQ, QUEBEC - Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced a
major investment that will permit construction of a new terminal building and
expansion of the apron at Kuujjuaq Airport.
"Today’s announcement clearly demonstrates the commitment of the Government
of Canada to regional and rural communities and to the safety of their air
services," said Mr. Lapierre. "In addition to ensuring the safety of airport
users, this investment will serve to respond to ever-increasing needs for
shipping, tourism and travel in Canada’s North."
This $14,390,000 investment includes construction of a new terminal building,
expansion of the airport apron, expansion of the public parking lot and other
related tasks. The work, which is to begin in the spring of 2006, will be
carried out over a two-year period.
"This project will make it possible to support local economic activity and
employment, while restoring essential facilities that should certainly be able
to serve this community for many years to come," added Mr. Lapierre.
Kuujjuaq Airport is considered a remote airport under the
National Airport
Policy. Main gateway to isolated communities in Canada’s North, Kuujjuaq Airport
is an essential link for emergency air ambulance evacuations, personal travel,
essential commodities and freight to the villages of Ungava Bay, Hudson Bay and
the Hudson Strait.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget
and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
