Ernest Alvia "Smokey" Smith

1914-2005

Canada has lost a legend. On August 3, 2005, Smokey Smith passed away in Vancouver as Canada's last surviving recipient of the Victoria Cross; Canada's highest award for valour.

"The sun has set on a true Canadian hero who lit up the lives of all who knew him. Smokey Smith's journey into legend was a path of valour, a trail of tribute and a source of inspiration for all Canadians." - The Honourable Albina Guarnieri, Minister of Veterans Affairs

Smokey's commitment to commemoration over the years has been tremendous. He has inspired others through his mischievous spirit and strength of character. At Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), the loss of Smokey Smith will be felt deeply. He has been an integral part of countless pilgrimages overseas and commemorative events throughout Canada, spreading the messages of remembrance and the importance of passing the torch to youth.

Since 1854, 94 Canadians have earned the prestigious Victoria Cross. Sixteen of these awards were presented to Canadians during the Second World War. Smokey Smith was the last surviving recipient of the highest military honour in the Commonwealth. As a tribute to Smokey and his contributions to Canada, VAC has prepared a special Web page.

As soon as funeral arrangements are determined, they will be available by calling toll-free 1-800-443-0394.
