Environmental Assessment of Amabel-Sauble Well System Upgrade Project to Continue as a Comprehensive Study
OTTAWA - September 1st, 2006 - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, today announced that a comprehensive study is the most appropriate type of environmental assessment for the proposed Amabel-Sauble Well System Upgrade Project in Sauble Beach, Ontario.
The Minister based her decision on the report and recommendation submitted by the responsible authority, Industry Canada. The report contains information on the scope of the project, the factors to be considered in the environmental assessment, public comments submitted to Industry Canada, the potential of the project to cause adverse environmental effects and the ability of the comprehensive study to address issues relating to the project.
Industry Canada will now continue the comprehensive study and submit its final report to the Minister of the Environment. At that time, the public will have an opportunity to comment on the findings and recommendations of the report before the Minister renders her decision.
The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is proposing to upgrade the Amabel-Sauble Well System. The purpose of the project is to address the need for additional supply capacity within the community for a 20 year planning period and for the water supply system to comply with the Ontario Drinking Water Systems Regulation. The project is proposed under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
