Minister Lunn Annonces Harbour Improvements at Fulford Harbour

September 17, 2006

VANCOUVER – The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Saanich--Gulf Islands, announced improvements at Fulford Harbour in British Columbia today, on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

"Canada’s new government is committed to providing a safe and functional facility at Fulford Harbour on Saltspring Island," said Minister Lunn. "These repairs are essential to the continuous safe operation of the harbour."

Improvements at the harbour will include the repair of wharf components, including timber piles, caps, stringers, handrails and some sections of deck planks. Work at the harbour is expected to be finished this fiscal year.

"Communities in the Gulf Islands rely heavily on water-based transportation" continued Minister Lunn, "I am proud to be part of a government that recognizes and supports valuable local infrastructure such as Fulford Harbour."

This project is being carried out under Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers and coastal communities.
