CANADA SIGNS NEW EXTRADITION TREATY WITH ITALY

OTTAWA, January 17, 2005 – A new extradition treaty between Canada and Italy has been signed by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, and his Italian counterpart, Minister Roberto Castelli.

"This new agreement modernizes the existing treaty, which was signed in 1981," said Minister Cotler. "As a result, it enables both Canada and Italy to more effectively respond to requests for extradition of individuals charged with or convicted of offences, including those of a transnational and serious nature."

The treaty streamlines some of the requirements involved in extradition cases. Notably, the new treaty takes a flexible and broad approach to what constitutes an extraditable offence. It allows extradition for any conduct subject to specified penalties that is considered to be an offence in both countries. This enables both Canada and Italy to capture a number of modern and serious offences including terrorism-related crimes.
