The National Arts Centre to raise funds for disaster relief efforts in South East Asia

January 10, 2005 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre announced today that it will donate $2.00 from every ticket sold from all disciplines for performances from January 12th to 19th to the Canadian Red Cross for the people of South Asia recently affected by the earthquakes and tsunamis. There will also be donation boxes in the Main Foyer with National Arts Centre volunteers collecting cash donations from patrons post performances taking place during that week. As well, 10% from all intermission bar sales will also be going towards the fund.

NAC President and CEO Peter Herrndorf said "The people of South East Asia have experienced great devastation. On behalf of the employees and patrons of the National Arts Centre we are looking forward to making this donation to those affected. All disciplines including the Orchestra, English theatre, French theatre and Dance are coming together to assist those affected in the South East Asia earthquakes and tsunamis.”

“The Red Cross relies on public and corporate donations to provide assistance during and following a disaster,” said Susan Cornette, Fund Development Coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross, Ottawa Branch.

“The outpouring of generosity and compassion being shown by individuals and institutions like the National Arts Centre is extraordinary,” said Cornette.  This money will help Red Cross provide relief items such as clean drinking water, shelter and medicine to those who so desperately need it, as well as support long term rehabilitation and reconstruction.”

Canadians wishing to make a financial donation may donate online, call 1-800-418-1111 or contact their local Canadian Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked "South East Asia Earthquake and Tidal Wave Relief" and mailed to Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 181 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.
