Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of former Premier Louis J. Robichaud

Prime Minister Paul Martin has expressed his condolences on the passing of former New Brunswick Premier Louis Robichaud.

“Louis Robichaud had a great impact on the history of New Brunswick and Canada. As the first Acadian to represent his province as Premier he will be remembered for his social reform initiatives, which sought to grant the same economic and social benefits to all his fellow citizens, particularly with regard to the rights of Acadians and the opportunities available to them. He also introduced a bill on official languages, making New Brunswick the first officially bilingual province.

He continued on in public life as a Senator, and played an active role in that capacity.

Throughout his career, he personified our Canadian values, sought to bridge the gap between rich and poor and between Anglophones and Francophones, and adhered to his much-cherished principles of equality and respect for differences.

Canadians shall miss this modest gentleman and consummate politician who worked tirelessly to better the lives of his fellow citizens.”
