IHDCYH Travel Awards for Students and Post-Doctoral Fellows

2006-07

The Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) promotes and supports research that improves the health and development of mothers, infants, children, youth, and families in Canada and throughout the world.

Program

IHDCYH is launching a competition for research trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their own research at annual, or other regular interval, meetings including international conferences, related to the Institute's mandate. The maximum amount for a single award is $1,000 to partially cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and registration. Up to 10 awards will be available for each of 2 competitions per year. The application deadlines are April 1st and November 1st.

Notification of decision: April 15 November 15

Total funds available: $10,000 $10,000

Eligibility

All annual conferences (including international meetings) related to the Institute's mandate are eligible under this program.
The trainees' research supervisor must be affiliated with IHDCYH.

Evaluation

Applications for IHDCYH travel award will be assessed by Institute senior staff, based on strength of the application relative to some or all of the following criteria:

The student or fellow must be the first author and presenter of the oral communication or poster. Priority will be given to first-time applicants.

* The four themes of research include "biomedical research; clinical research; research respecting health systems and health services; the health of populations, social and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health."

The maximum amount for any individual award will be $1,000. Expenses eligible for support include:

How to apply

No application form is required.  All requested information and attachments (see below) must be submitted before the application can be eligible for funding.

Application should include:

  1. A cover letter summarizing your present research and explaining how attending the selected meeting will benefit your career (1 page maximum);
  2. Confirmation of your status as a full-time Masters or PhD student or as a post-doctoral fellow at a recognized Canadian academic institution;
  3. A copy of your abbreviated curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum);
  4. A letter of support from your research supervisor;
  5. Proposed travel itinerary and budget (indicate if other travel funds are available);
  6. A copy of the abstract submitted to the selected meeting and the letter confirming its selection for presentation.
