Chief Electoral Officer Presents Report on 39th General Election
and Official Voting Results to Speaker of House of Commons

OTTAWA, Friday, May 12, 2006 — The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Jean‑Pierre Kingsley, presented today his report on the 39th general election to the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Milliken. He also published the official voting results for the election.

Pursuant to section 534 of the Canada Elections Act, the Chief Electoral Officer must make a report to the Speaker within 90 days after the date specified for the return of the writs in the election proclamation. The report, now tabled in the House of Commons, describes Elections Canada’s activities leading up to and during the election as well as related wrap-up activities.

Moreover, pursuant to section 533 of the Canada Elections Act, after a general election the Chief Electoral Officer must publish a report that sets out the voting results by polling division and any other information the Chief Electoral Officer considers pertinent.

The official voting results include such information as the number of votes cast for each candidate, the number of rejected ballots and the number of names on the final lists of electors.
