RCMP seize non-duty paid cigarettes from Windsor residence

(WINDSOR, ON, May 4 2006) – On Tuesday, May 2, 2006, the Customs and Excise Section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police executed search warrants on a residence in South Windsor and a local storage locker.

Search warrants were executed as a result of an investigation into the alleged sale and distribution of contraband cigarettes that were purchased in the Brantford, Ontario area. The cigarettes were allegedly brought to Windsor where they were stored in a residence and storage locker before being sold to businesses along the 401 corridor in Southwestern Ontario.

During the course of the investigation police seized approximately 180 cases, each containing 50 cartons of un-stamped tobacco products including Sago brand, Putters brand, and DK's. These cigarettes were distributed with no duties and taxes being paid. Also seized was computer equipment, a money counter, fax machines, one vehicle and approximately $80,000 in Canadian and US currency.

The seized tobacco products represent approximately $500,000 in evaded taxes.

"This type of criminal activity affects the existence of legitimate businesses that sell cigarettes with all the duties and taxes paid," stated Sgt. Nick Wentoniuk of the RCMP Windsor Customs and Excise Section. "These legitimate businesses are unable to compete with those businesses who sell the cheaper brands."

Charged is Ali YASSINE, age 35, Kenilworth Drive, Windsor Ontario

YASSINE is charged with offences under the Excise Act related to possession and distribution of unstamped tobacco products.
