NATIONAL CURRENT AFFAIRS

Canadian Food Inspection Agency - Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed that a beef cow from Alberta has tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). No part of the animal entered the human food or animal feed chains. The farm of origin has been confirmed.

The CFIA has launched an investigation into the feeding regime and storage practices employed on the farm, as well as the production and source of feeds delivered to the farm. The CFIA will identify the cattle born on the farm in the 12 months before and after the affected animal's birth, as well as the offspring born to the affected animal during the last two years. Any live animals found from these groups will be segregated and tested.
