Government of Canada partners with Capilano College to strengthen oil spill management and response
North Vancouver, British Columbia – The Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport), today announced a partnership with Capilano College to develop a new oil spill management training program to increase B.C.'s expertise and knowledge when responding to hazardous oil spills.
It will be the only program in Canada to offer a certificate and degree in oil spill management. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is investing $146,000 in the program.
"British Columbia's coastline is home to valuable recreational, archaeological, heritage, wildlife and aquatic resources, and it's important these resources be protected from the damaging effects of oil spills ," said Minister Owen. "This management program will provide professionals the necessary training to effectively respond to oil spills and keep environmental damage to a minimum."
"Capilano College is committed to developing new and innovative programs which combine our strengths with the needs of our students and our communities," said Dr. Greg Lee, president of Capilano College. "This initiative is an excellent opportunity for the College to work with the private sector to benefit both business and the environment."
This oil spill management program will be offered as part of the College's Environmental Science and Management program. Its mission is to develop, improve and strengthen the practice of environmental professionals in the fields of natural resource conservation, environmental protection and management, and to foster an attitude of appreciation and care for the natural world.
Capilano College was established in 1968 by the communities of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Howe Sound. It has since grown to a multi-campus 14,200 student community college.
Western Economic Diversification Canada is the federal department mandated to support economic diversification in communities across Western Canada through activities that advance Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Communities. Funding for this program was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
