Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH)

Welcome Message

April 3, 2006

As I assume the Scientific Directorship of the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH), I am both humbled and energized. Being the Scientific Director for the ICRH is a challenging task and I look forward to the privilege of working with some of the most talented researchers in the world and the Directors of the other twelve Institutes. Together we will strive to achieve our collective goal of reducing the mortality and morbidity of some of the most fatal diseases affecting Canadians.

I thank everyone for all the wonderful support that has been pouring in from my friends, colleagues, CIHR staff, partnership organizations, governmental agencies and researchers around the globe. Thank you to the members of the Institute Advisory Board, who have tirelessly devoted their time to the strategic directions and operational framework of the Institute. Their energy and wisdom will be called upon during the transition and planning of the next phase of Institute growth. I particularly want to thank Dr. Bruce McManus for his vision and hard work over the past 5 years. As the inaugural Scientific Director of the ICRH, he led us to the successes that we see today in the cardio-respiratory community. It is Bruce's sense of personal commitment that brought the ICRH from an embryonic concept to a rigorous reality. We also owe our gratitude to Bruce's exceptionally talented team: Elissa Hines Reimer, Salima Harji, Melanie Train, Katherine Gardner, Dr. Arun Chocklingam. They have laboured long hours and poured their 'hearts' into making the ICRH what we see today.

As we go forward and build upon the foundation that Bruce and his team created, I would like to challenge our circulatory, respiratory, blood, stroke, sleep, critical care and related communities to reach for the next level of excellence. Like the achievement of Canada's Olympic athletes in Turin this earlier year, it is our desire that Canadian researchers "go for more gold" by the time of the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. Over the next 5 years, I would like to see more of our researchers achieving global impact and recognition on the 'world research podium' for their extraordinary achievements. ICRH's goal is to enable excellence in health research and translate our knowledge into benefits both locally and abroad.

We live in extraordinary times, personally witnessing the maturation of fundamental genomic and proteomic technology, the prowess in clinical research, and the ability to track national outcomes; we are better positioned than ever to turn innovation into practice. We will constantly strive toward improving the health of Canadians, through innovation of ideas and excellence in practice. Ultimately, I would like to see every Canadian living a healthy life, no longer suffering the ravages of cardio-respiratory illnesses because of the knowledge and insight that we will collectively generate. I look forward to working with members of our community and partners to achieve this dream together.

I would also like to challenge ourselves to bring more young talents into the ICRH community, so that they can be the leaders of tomorrow and continue our mission. Together, we will make the difference.

Through our electronic newsletter and website I will provide regular updates of ICRH's activities. Please accept my invitation to provide your input regarding ICRH's new course and directions by writing to me at icrh-iscr@cihr-irsc.gc.ca. I look forward to working with many of you over the coming months and years.

Sincerely,

Peter Liu
