Hutterian Brethren Church Fined for Illegally Transporting Meat

On March 28, 2006, Hutterian Brethren Church of Spring Creek entered a guilty plea for one count of violating the Meat Inspection Act in provincial court in Medicine Hat, Alta.

Hutterian Brethren Church was fined $2,000 for unlawfully transporting meat products from Saskatchewan to Alberta that were not prepared in a registered establishment. Hutterian Brethren Church slaughtered uninspected chickens in Saskatchewan, which were subsequently transported to Alberta for sale.

According to the Meat Inspection Act, meat products can only be distributed interprovincially if they originate from a federally registered establishment.
