Closure of Canadian Museum of Nature

April 3 to 13, 2006

Ottawa, April 3, 2006 -- The Canadian Museum of Nature will close to the public from April 3 to 13, and will reopen on April 14. This scheduled closure is related to the ongoing renewal of the Victoria Memorial Museum Building.

During the closed period, Museum staff will be moving exhibition components (including fossils and dioramas) into new gallery spaces on the west side of the building, which is now under construction. As well, the Museum is installing a major new travelling exhibition, Fatal Attraction, which opens May 1.

Because of the movement of large specimens and required access to doors, floor space and elevators, the decision was made to close the Museum for this period.

Extensive renovations to the nearly 100-year-old Victoria Memorial Museum Building began in spring 2004 and will continue in phases until 2009. The rehabilitated building will provide a modernized showcase with new infrastructure and environmental controls, and will serve as a springboard for national programmes that are linked to new galleries. On October 20, 2006, the first of these new galleries, including the Talisman Energy Fossil Gallery and refurbished mammal and bird galleries, will be unveiled in the newly renovated west side.
