Second Meeting of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security in Vancouver

VANCOUVER, May 24, 2005 -- Minister of State (Multiculturalism) Raymond Chan spoke today at the second meeting of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security.

"I am pleased to welcome the members of the Roundtable to Vancouver, and to have the opportunity to speak to them one more time. These men and women with various backgrounds guide us to better respond to the security interests of Canadians," said Minister of State Chan. "I sincerely appreciate this dialogue, which is taking place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and common understanding of our diverse society."

Border security is the topic of this second meeting. The members of the Roundtable will be in discussions with representatives from various federal government departments and agencies, including the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, and the Canada Border Services Agency.

The Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security was created in April 2004 after the launch of the National Security Policy. The Roundtable provides a forum for discussions on new national security trends. Its objective is to facilitate the exchange of information among the Government and diverse communities regarding the impact of national security issues on Canadian responsibilities and rights. The Roundtable also gives the Government an overview of how national security measures may have an impact on diverse communities.

The members of the Roundtable will provide input to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and the Minister of Justice, who will take into account the members' observations with respect to the ongoing development of matters relating to national security.
