SOUTHAMPTON, Ontario – Paul Steckle, Member of Parliament for Huron-Bruce, announced today, on behalf of Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest in the rehabilitation of one of the wall structures at the harbour facility in Southampton, Ontario.
"This funding demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to maintain a system of safe harbour facilities which enable fishermen and communities to make the most of their economic opportunities," said Mr. Steckle.
The Southampton facility comprises 70 hectares of property consisting of two river entrance structures and marginal wharves that are located at the mouth of the Saugeen River. The scope of the repair work will involve the installation of a 40-metre steel sheet pile wall to encapsulate a section of one of the existing marginal wharf structures, placement of some rip rap for scour protection and other minor works. The repair work is necessary to restore safety at the harbour for the continued use by the commercial fishermen and other users.
Plans and specifications for the project are being finalized by Public Works and Government Services Canada and a tender call will follow very shortly. It is anticipated that on-site work will begin in December.
This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Program. The project will be implemented utilizing the contracting services of Public Works and Government Services Canada.
