ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, October 27, 2006 – The Honourable Vic Toews, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Mr. Justice C. Stephen Glithero, a Justice of the Superior Court in and for the Province of Ontario is elevated to Regional Senior Judge, Central South Region, for this Court. He replaces Mr. Justice J.C. Kent who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Glithero received a Bachelor of Laws in 1970 and Bachelor of Arts in 1967 from the University of Western Ontario and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1972. He articled with Lang, Michener, Cranston, Farquharson and Wright in Toronto before moving to practise law first in Galt (1972-76) and then in Kitchener (1976-92). His practice expertise was in the areas of civil and criminal litigation with a p articular focus on criminal law. Mr. Justice Glithero was appointed to the Ontario Court (General Division) in 1992. Since becoming a judge, he has acted as Local Administrative Justice for Kitchener, Regional Municipality of Waterloo and as Chairman of the Superior Court of Ontario Electronic Bench Book Committee and completed oversight of the development of the first Electronic Bench Book for the Court.

The HonourableFrancis James Campbell Newbould, Q.C., partner in the Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, is appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. He replaces Mr. Justice J.G.J. O'Driscoll ( Toronto) who retired.

Mr. Justice Newbould received a Bachelor of Laws in 1967 from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 from Queen's University and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1969. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1981 and has practised first with Tilley Carson & Findlay (1969-1988) and then with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (1988-2006). Mr. Justice Newbould's legal expertise is in the area of commercial litigation, arbitration and mediation. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Member Arbitrator of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and is a Director of Pacific & Western Bank of Canada and of Cuddy International Inc.

The HonourableLaurence Arthur Pattillo, partner with the firm of Torys LLP of Toronto, is appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. He replaces Mr. Justice D. R. Cameron ( Toronto) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Pattillo received a Bachelor of Laws in 1972 from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 from Dalhousie University. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1974 and of British Columbia in 1981. Mr. Justice Pattillo's practice expertise is in civil litigation, primarily the area of commercial disputes. He is currently a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada and Vice-chair of the Professional Regulation Committee of the LSUC as well as Trustee of the Law Foundation of Ontario and President of the Board of Directors of LINK, the Ontario Lawyers' Assistance Program in Ontario. He is also a past President of the Ontario Special Olympics.

The HonourableAlexander Sosna, partner with the firm of Sosna & Burch of Oshawa, is appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. He replaces Madam Justice S. Chapnik ( Toronto) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Mr. Justice Sosna received a Bachelor of Laws from Queen's University Law School in 1974 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1971 from the University of Toronto. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1976 and has been certified as a Specialist in Criminal Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Mr. Justice Sosna practiced as an Assistant Crown Attorney for the Province of Ontario in Whitby (1976-1979) and then moved to the private practice of law in Oshawa. He has continued to act as a Federal Agent for Justice Canada, specializing in narcotics and tax prosecutions (1995-2005). Mr. Justice Sosna is a past Director of St. Vladamir Ukrainian Institute, Toronto.

The HonourableBarbara Ann Conway, lawyer in the Toronto Office of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, is appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. She replaces Madam Justice S.E. Greer ( Toronto) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Conway received a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) in 1980 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1977 from the University of Toronto. She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1982 and has practised with Goodman and Carr (1982-1984) and with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (1988-2006). From 1984 to 1988 she acted as corporate counsel for Cara Operations Limited. Madam Justice Conway's legal expertise is in the area of corporate/commercial law, franchising and product distribution law and intellectual property law. She has written and presented on various aspects of franchising and production distribution.

The HonourableGisele Marguerite Miller, Assistant Crown Attorney with the Ontario Crown Attorney's Office in Barrie, is appointed judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. She replaces Mr. Justice T.M. Dunn ( Brampton) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.

Madam Justice Miller received a Master of Laws (with Distinction) in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2001 from the University of London, University College and a Bachelor of Laws in 1988 from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1990. Madam Justice Miller has been an Assistant Crown Attorney for the Province of Ontario Crown Attorney's Office in Simcoe County (1990-2006) as well as a Crown of the Ontario Review Board (2001-2003). Her legal expertise is in the area of criminal law, including legal issues relating to mental health, youth justice, and domestic and sexual violence. Madam Justice Miller is an avid writer and triathlete.

These appointments are effective immediately.
