Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Canadians Outside Canada

Canadians outside Canada

I will be travelling on Census Day; do I still need to fill in and return my census questionnaire?

Yes. It is important that all Canadians count themselves in, including those travelling outside Canada, either on holiday or business on May 16th. By law, each household must provide the information requested in the census.

During the first two weeks in May, your census questionnaire arrived at your household. If someone else in your household completed the questionnaire and included you, you do not need to complete another form. If you were not included in your household’s completed questionnaire you can telephone the Census Help Line (1 877 594-2006) until September 15, and staff can help you complete your questionnaire over the telephone.

I am a Canadian resident currently living and working abroad.  Should I fill in a census questionnaire?

Yes. Canadians abroad can complete a census questionnaire at a Canadian embassy if they will be away for an extended period.

If you are abroad working for the Foreign Service, the Department of National Defence or for a provincial or territorial government, your questionnaire will be delivered to your place of work.  If you do not receive your questionnaire by May 16, 2006, please inform your supervisor.
