About the CollectionStatistics Canada publications The Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre collects and provides access to the complete collection of Statistics Canada's documents produced in paper and electronic form. This collection is diverse and contains numbered publications as well as research papers, working papers, user guides, CD-ROMs and associated documentation and internal documents. This collection dates to the founding of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in 1918. Also included in this collection are documents and publications of the various statistical divisions which merged in 1918 to become the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. These documents include census, foreign trade, industrial production, births/deaths and institutional statistics dating back to 1841. Canadian official publications and documents The Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre collects monographs, serials and annual reports published by the Canadian federal and provincial governments, in accordance with the selection standards set out in the Library Collection Policy. It also collects all statistics published by federal and provincial governments, the Statutes of Canada and of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the Gazettes for each province, and selected parliamentary papers of the Canadian government. Foreign official statistical publications The Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre holds an extremely valuable and unique collection of foreign statistical publications, including census, vital and trade statistics, prices, financial data, and many other documents in both economic and social statistics. The collection was begun in 1918 during the development of the science of statistics. In many cases, the collection parallels the growth and changes in the practice of collecting and publishing statistical information. The collection was built using exchange agreements with 146 individual countries in order to fulfill the Library's goal of developing its collection as a national resource in the general subject area of statistics. The foreign collection consists primarily of official statistical publications, "official" here meaning the documents are published by or for the departments or agencies of national governments (e.g. France's Ministry of Industry, or Sweden's National Central Bureau of Statistics). The number of exchange agreements were reduced to agreements with 37 governments and agencies in the late 1980's. Currently the collection is in a process of rationalization, with some of the historical material being repatriated to countries of origin, some being replaced by microfilm and some discarded. The emerging collection will be catalogued and will appear in BiblioCat over time. International official publications Statistical publications of international organizations are collected on a selective basis, as they relate to the interests of the Agency. The Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre has documents from such organizations as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Eurostat, World Health Organization, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. U.S. Bureau of the Census publications The Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre, as a result of an exchange agreement with the U.S. Bureau of the Census, keeps at least one copy of each of the latter's publications. The historical collection, where possible, will be acquired in microform and current materials will be kept in the most usable format. In support of the mandate of the Statistics Canada Employment Equity Committee to ensure equitable representation and treatment of employees in designated groups, the objectives of the Employee Resource Centre (ERC) are:
