Alternate Interface for Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Data

Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) is a study conducted every four years for youth aged 11, 13, and 15 in approximately 30 countries to provide data on the health, well-being, and behaviour of youth. Since these data on E-STAT are very popular, we have developed an alternate interface to access this data directly from the E-STAT launch page.

This portion of the website is organized in a student-friendly format, with icons representing each of 10 topics: Personal Feelings, Home Life, Friends, Risk Behaviour, School, Healthy Eating, Bullying and Fighting, Injuries and Injury Prevention, Health and Illness, and Leisure Time. Once an icon is selected, the user will be brought to a screen listing HBSC tables for that topic. The main HBSC page also includes links to relevant lesson plans and related web pages.

This new interface to Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children information can be accessed from the E-STAT launch page. Click Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (data updated every four years on CANSIM).

CANSIM lets you track trends in virtually every aspect of Canadian life. This latest update includes software enhancements as well as new tables and updates to most of the existing tables. Changes are described below under the headings Data, Search option, Help and Graphical option:

Data:

  • As of July 2006, approximately 2,600 tables accounting for over 36 million time series have been updated. CANSIM now contains the latest data from over 250 different Statistics Canada surveys.

We suggest you look at these:

  • The new CANSIM tables 153-0035, 153-0036, 153-0037, 153-0038 and 153-0039 cover the environmental statistics for drainage areas for the period of 1981 to 2001.
  • The CANSIM table 052-0004 covers the projected population, by projection scenario, sex and age group until 2056.
  • The CANSIM table 003-0080 could be interesting for those who like nutrition.
  •
  • Please note that the CANSIM table 326-0013 is frozen. The table is available to Beyond 20/20 users by clicking the Beyond 20/20 link at the bottom of the page. Tutorials " Using the Beyond 20/20 Browser" are available.

Search Options:

To find the tables you are looking for,

You will find a list with radio buttons for the output format screen for Retrieve as a Table and Retrieve as time series.  You will see all the choices of output formats at a quick glance.

Help

  • CANSIM User Guide for E-STAT
The updated version of this User Guide takes into account the enhancements that have been made to CANSIM.
  • Updated version of CANSIM Help with this page - Detailed context-sensitive explanations of options are available on each page of E-STAT. The Help button appears under Search CANSIM on the left side bar, when you enter the data module. This Help function provides explanations of the options available on each screen (or web page), as it is opened.

Graphical option

Four new output formats have been added:
Under Retrieve as a Table

  • WK1 (generic worksheet file), time as rows;
  • WK1 (generic worksheet file), time as columns.

Under Retrieve as time series

Human Activity and the Environment: Annual Statistics

In addition to the article on solid waste, Human Activity and the Environment also provides a comprehensive set of data describing how Canadians interact with the environment. It includes data on topics such as climate, natural resources, ecosystems, and environmental practices. The tables, figures, and maps serve as a general reference for environmental statistics in Canada, pointing readers to available data on environmental-human interactions.

E-STAT has made the data available in two file formats:

  • XLS (Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet) that can be viewed with Microsoft Excel.
  • CSV (Comma Separated Value) which allows you to access each table in any spreadsheet application.

At the E-STAT Table of Contents, select Preview and Articles > Environment > Tables available in Excel format and CSV format.
