Introduction

The ability of the public service to fulfill its mandate and meet such challenges as accountability, service delivery, globalization, citizen engagement and others in a knowledge-based age will depend upon the quality and talent of its leaders. While each individual has personal responsibility for career planning and development, to ensure highly skilled senior managers, it is in the best interest of the Public Service of Canada to provide a corporate process for executive development.

In the context of public service renewal one of the Accelerated Executive Development Program's (AEXDP) objectives is to provide a center of excellence for executive leadership development to help meet the needs of the public service. As well, the Program provides support to departments to assist them in fulfilling their strategic Human Resources and Business Plans.

Selection for the AEXDP is based on assessment against ADM level competencies to identify individuals who have strong leadership potential. The Program aims to attract executives who aspire to a high level of excellence and key senior roles in the federal public service. Participants must be motivated to invest in their development during the Program and should be willing to continue to contribute to the public service/functional communities for a period of ten years, which includes four to five years spent on the Program and an equivalent contribution upon completion of the Program.

With its focus on learning and diverse experience, the AEXDP is an appropriate career choice for those who are fully committed to their longer-term learning and development.

"The AEXDP contributes to public service renewal and offers excellent opportunities to public service executives to develop their leadership potential. We fully support this program and would encourage interested executives to apply."

New for this launch is the inclusion of specialist streams for the finance and human resources communities . The Program is generally aimed at EX-01 and EX-02 levels and on an exceptional basis, in particular for the functional communities, to the EX-03 level. Once on the Program, participants begin assignments of approximately 18-24 months. Depending on their level and learning needs, participants are engaged in the AEXDP, on average, for a period of four years.

Promotion while on the Program is based on participants' demonstrated competence and commitment to learning and development. Generally, participants graduate from the Program at the EX-03 level and form a feeder group for the ADM Community.

Delivered in partnership with the Canada School of Public Service (CSPS), the AEXDP provides participants with an innovative combination of learning and development to enhance their leadership competencies and expand their experience within the public service.

"AEXDP has been a tremendously successful program for developing high potential executives and I am pleased that we are now able to provide a specific focus on financial management executives who have their sights set on the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role. I fully support the AEXDP-FIN stream and encourage financial executives to apply for this new stream of the AEXDP program."
