About Us - Chief Information Officer Branch,

The Chief Information Officer Branch (CIOB) sets strategic directions for information management (IM), information technology (IT) and service delivery in the Government of Canada.

The Branch is responsible for developing and implementing strategies, policies, standards and guidelines and key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve service delivery, IM, IT, privacy and security in departments and agencies, and enhance compliance with Treasury Board requirements. Through these activities, CIOB plays a key role in identifying and leveraging opportunities to improve the overall quality and value for money of government service delivery and internal operations.

Principal activities in CIOB include:

  • Developing and implementing an enterprise architecture (EA) for Government of Canada services, information, solutions and technology to facilitate government‑wide and inter‑jurisdictional collaboration and improve efficiency.
  • Developing and implementing a phased implementation strategy for the Management of Government Information Policy to enhance IM within departments and agencies and establish the role of shared IM infrastructure services.
  • Monitoring the designs, implementation plans and management of significant IT projects to determine their strategic value and performance.
  • Defining the Government of Canada's strategy for transforming service delivery by rethinking and integrating service offerings and using common business processes, and overseeing its implementation in departments and agencies.
  • Establishing and managing a program to modernize the delivery of government administrative services (e.g., IT, human resources, financial and material management) through the use of shared infrastructures.
