Travel and Hospitality Proactive Disclosure Requirements

The Office of the Auditor General of Canada is committed to economy, transparency, and the highest ethical standards in financial administration.

In December 2003, the Treasury Board of Canada announced a new policy on the mandatory publication of the travel and hospitality expenses of senior executives. This Web site provides information on the expenses incurred by the Auditor General, the Deputy Auditor General, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and the Assistant Auditors General.

Every three months, we will disclose travel and hospitality expenses of senior Office officials incurred in the previous quarter.

Please note that information that would normally be withheld under the Privacy Act does not appear on this Web site.

Travel expenses

The majority of travel expenses incurred by the Office including those incurred by the Auditor General, the Deputy Auditor General, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and Assistant Auditors General directly support our audits and professional practice. Our head Office is located in Ottawa, and we have regional offices in Halifax, Montreal, Edmonton, and Vancouver. The federal departments and agencies, Crown corporations, and territories that we audit are located across Canada. We also audit international activities of departments and agencies, like the Canadian International Development Agency and Foreign Affairs Canada. We travel to deliver speeches about our work and to participate in organizations like the Canadian Council of Legislative Auditors, the CCAF-FCVI Inc., the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The Office also incurs travel expenses to support our corporate service functions and to allow employees to attend professional development events.

Travel expenses for senior Office officials paid directly by other organizations are not included in these disclosures. Travel expenses paid for by the Office for senior Office officials that are recovered from other organizations are indicated as such.

Hospitality expenses

Hospitality expenses are incurred by the Office to support our audits, professional practice, corporate services, and professional development; and to motivate employees to strive for excellence. The Auditor General, the Deputy Auditor General, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and Assistant Auditors General may incur hospitality expenses when they meet with parliamentarians (P), senior officials of government departments, agencies, and Crown Corporations (G); employees of the Office of the Auditor General (E); and external advisors and representatives of other organizations (O); to discuss the work of the Office.

The Office incurs other hospitality expenses not included in the disclosures reported on this Web site for events such as professional development symposiums. Those expenses are managed by employees below the Assistant Auditor General level.

Hospitality expenses of senior Office management, incurred while traveling, are disclosed on this Web site in the same period as their related travel expenses. The amounts disclosed include all taxes.

Hospitality expenses for senior Office officials paid directly by other organizations are not included in these disclosures. Hospitality expenses paid for by the Office for senior Office officials that are recovered from other organizations are indicated as such.
