Entry Into Force of the Tax Convention Between Canada and Algeria

Finance Minister Paul Martin today announced that a Convention entered into force on December 26, 2000 between Canada and Algeria for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on capital.

The Convention was signed on February 28, 1999, in Algiers, and the instruments of ratification of the Convention were exchanged there on December 26, 2000. In accordance with Article 28 of the Convention, its provisions have effect:

  1. in respect of withholding taxes, on amounts paid or credited to non-residents on or after January 1, 2001; and
  2. in respect of other taxes, for taxation years beginning on or after January 1, 2000.
