Entry Into Force of the Tax Convention Between Canada and Jordan

Finance Minister Paul Martin today announced that a Convention entered into force on December 24, 2000 between Canada and Jordan for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

The Convention was signed on September 6, 1999, in Amman, and the instruments of ratification of the Convention were exchanged there on December 24, 2000. In accordance with Article 27 of the Convention, the provisions of the Convention have effect:

  1. in respect of withholding taxes, on amounts paid or credited to non-residents on or after January 1, 2001; and
  2. in respect of other taxes, for taxation years beginning on or after January 1, 2001.
