Minister of Finance Announces Venue for G-20 Ministerial in Ottawa

Finance Minister Paul Martin today announced that the third meeting of the G-20 finance ministers and central bank governors will be held at the Government Conference Centre, 2 Rideau St., on November 16 and 17, 2001.

Ministers and governors will discuss the role of the G-20 in the fight against terrorism and continue to examine ways to make the world less vulnerable to financial crises.

"The G-20 is well placed to respond quickly to the pressing needs of a fast-changing global environment," said Minister Martin. "These discussions are an important and timely step that builds on recent efforts in the international fight against terrorism."

The International Monetary and Financial Committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Development Committee of the IMF and World Bank Group will also meet at the Government Conference Centre on November 17 and 18, 2001.

Minister Martin invited the G-20 to Canada after the Indian government decided not to host the meeting in New Delhi.

The inaugural G-20 ministerial meeting took place in Berlin in December 1999 and was followed by a second meeting in Montréal in October 2000. Minister Martin has been chair of the group since its founding.

The G-20 consists of finance ministers and central bank governors from 19 industrialized and emerging market countries. It also includes representatives from the European Union, the European Central Bank, and the Bretton Woods institutions (the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank) and their policy committees. The purpose of the G-20 is to ensure broader participation in discussions on international financial affairs among countries that play a key role in the global economy.

A separate G-20 media advisory providing further details about media facilities and accreditation is attached, and is available on the G-20 Web site at www.g20.org.
