Finance Department to Make Electronic Copies of Federal Budget Available in Major Canadian Cities on Budget Day

The Department of Finance today announced plans to make diskette copies of the budget technical documents more widely available for sale in major cities across Canada immediately on release of the budget.

The new service will be available to tax practitioners and members of the general public who need the budget technical documents on budget day. The copies, in diskette form only, will be distributed as a public service by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) in cooperation with the Provincial Institutes of Chartered Accountants/Ordre and will be available for pick up at their offices, as well as from federal regional offices in Calgary and Quebec City. Because of cost, security and other logistical considerations, printed copies of the budget will be available outside Ottawa on the day following the budget presentation only.

"This new arrangement, provided as a public service by the CICA, will make it possible for our members and the general public across Canada to examine the technical details of the federal budget immediately on release and to assess its impact," Michael Rayner FCA, CICA President said.

The electronic versions will be in four formats - MSWord, Wordperfect 5.0, FolioViews and Adobe Acrobat - and will be available when the budget is released in stand alone version ($500) or network version ($1,000) for each language to partially offset the cost of preparing and distributing advance copies of the budget. To ensure delivery, prepaid orders must be received by the CICA by February 20. No orders will be accepted on budget day.

Copies of the budget speech, the budget in brief and other related information documents will continue to be available free of charge from the Finance Canada Distribution Centre, from accredited bookstores in various cities, from participating supermarket information centres and on the INTERNET information network.

Attached is an order form for diskette versions of the budget as well as a list of pick up locations in each of the cities.
