Canada Plans U.S. Dollar Global Bond Issue

Secretary of State Doug Peters, on behalf of the Minister of Finance, Paul Martin, today announced that Canada intends to issue a global offering of U.S. dollar bonds for simultaneous distribution in Asia, Europe and North America. The global offering will be underwritten by a syndicate jointly led by Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch. The syndicate will include an international and Canadian group of co-lead managers.

The issue is intended to replace existing short-term liabilities funding Canada's exchange reserves. The issue would not be used to fund government operations, which are financed exclusively in Canadian dollars.
