Entry Into Force of the Tax Convention Between Canada and Ecuador

Finance Minister Paul Martin today announced that the Convention between Canada and Ecuador for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion entered into force on December 20, 2001.

The Convention was signed in Quito, Ecuador, on June 28, 2001. In accordance with Article 28 of the Convention, its provisions have effect:

    (a) in respect of withholding taxes, on amounts paid or credited on or after January 1, 2002; and

    (b) in respect of other taxes, for taxation years beginning on or after January 1, 2002.
