Ottawa, January 15, 2002 Tax Treaty Negotiations with ChinaFinance Minister Paul Martin today announced that negotiations for the conclusion of a revised income tax treaty between Canada and the People’s Republic of China will be held during the third week of March 2002. The purpose of this release is to ensure that persons whose interests are affected have an opportunity to inform the Government of any particular issues of double taxation, which might be resolved in a tax treaty. The Government is particularly interested in learning of any difficulties encountered by Canadians under China’s tax system so that these issues might be taken into account in negotiations. Persons wishing to offer comments concerning the negotiations should send their views to the Department of Finance at: Tax Legislation Division Fax: (613) 992-4450 ___________________
