Ottawa, February 8, 2002 Ottawa Meeting Launches 2002 G-7 Finance Ministers’ and Central Bank Governors’ ProcessFinance Minister Paul Martin will host his first meeting as 2002 chair of the G-7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors this weekend in Ottawa. "Our first meeting of 2002 is an important opportunity to map out a work plan for the year ahead and to review global economic developments," said Minister Martin. "In particular, I will be very interested to hear my colleagues’ views on the current state of the global economy and the outlook going forward." The meeting begins with a working dinner in Ottawa tonight, followed tomorrow by a full-day session at Willson House at Meech Lake, Quebec. Ministers and governors will discuss the global economic outlook, efforts to improve the resolution of international financial crises, development issues and combatting terrorist financing. Attending the meetings are the finance ministers and central bank governors of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Representatives from Russia, Spain (which currently holds the Presidency of the European Union) and the European Central Bank will also attend some of the discussions. The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and the President of the World Bank will also take part in selected portions of the meeting. ___________________ For further information:
