Minister Martin Attends International Development Conference

Finance Minister Paul Martin will join representatives from more than 180 countries to discuss issues of financing and development today at a major international conference in Monterrey, Mexico.

"The breadth of representation at this conference makes the Monterrey meeting a unique opportunity," Minister Martin said. "By including such a large and varied number of participants, this conference offers an ideal environment for exchanging ideas and perspectives on critical development issues."

National leaders as well as ministers of finance, foreign affairs and development from around the world are attending the five-day International Conference on Financing for Development, from March 18 to 22.

The conference also brings together the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations as well as representatives from governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the business community.

Minister Martin will participate in a United Nations roundtable of ministers, NGOs and business people on the topic of "Coherence in Development." Following that the Minister will attend a meeting of finance ministers, where he will offer opening remarks on the issue of "New Mechanisms for Sovereign Debt Restructurings."
