Canada Premium Bond Series 26 and Canada Savings Bond Series 77 Sales End Monday, April 1, 2002

Secretary of State (International Financial Institutions) John McCallum today announced that Canada Premium Bond (CPB) Series 26 and Canada Savings Bond (CSB) Series 77 will be withdrawn from sale at the close of business on Monday, April 1, 2002. These series of bonds will end the 2001 sales campaign that began October 9, 2001.

CPB Series 26, with an issue date of April 1, 2002, and a 10-year term to maturity, features an interest rate of 2.00 per cent for the first year, rising to 6.00 per cent for the fifth year. The annual compound rate of return, based on these guaranteed rates, will be 3.99 per cent if held for the five years. CPBs are redeemable once a year on the anniversary of the issue date and during the 30 days thereafter.

CSB Series 77, with an issue date of April 1, 2002, and a 10-year term to maturity, features an interest rate of 1.30 per cent for the first year, 2.75 per cent for the second year and 4.00 per cent for the third year. The annual compound rate of return, based on these minimum guaranteed rates, will be 2.67 per cent if held for the three years. CSBs are cashable at any time.

CPB Series 26 and CSB Series 77, together with their no-fee retirement savings plan option, are available for direct purchase from the Government online at www.csb.gc.ca, by phone Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern Time at 1 888 773-9999, or wherever Canadians bank or invest.

CPB Series 26 rates for the remaining five years to maturity and CSB Series 77 rates for the remaining seven years to maturity will be announced at future dates.

After this issue, New Canada Savings Bonds will be on sale again in October 2002.

As in the past, the Minister of Finance reserves the right to terminate sales at any time.
