Entry Into Force of the Tax Agreement Between Canada and Germany

Finance Minister Paul Martin today announced that a new Agreement between Canada and Germany for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion entered into force on March 28, 2002.

The Agreement was signed in Berlin on April 19, 2001. In accordance with Article 31 of the Agreement, its provisions have effect:

a) in respect of withholding taxes, on amounts paid or credited to non-residents on or after January 1, 2001; and

b) in respect of other taxes, for taxation years beginning after 2000.

This Agreement replaces the tax treaty between Canada and Germany signed on July 17, 1981.

The full text of the Agreement is available on the Department of Finance Canada Web site at www.fin.gc.ca/treaties/treatystatus_e.html.
