Ottawa, June 3, 2002 Finance Minister Receives Reports of Auditor General Regarding Tax Collection Agreement OverpaymentsRelated documents:
John Manley, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, today received four reports from the Auditor General of Canada concerning overpayments to provinces under the Tax Collection Agreements. These reports were prepared in response to a request by the Department of Finance following the January 29, 2002, announcement that the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) had identified a problem in tax accounting that caused the overpayments. "We need to review and thoroughly understand the Auditor General’s findings before making a decision on how to resolve this issue," said Minister Manley. "As well, we must consider what impact there may be on the provinces and territories." Three of the reports cover the years prior to 1993, 1993-1996, and 1997-1999. The fourth report deals with the CCRA’s current accounting practices. Copies of the reports may be accessed using the links above, and printed copies are available upon request. ___________________
