Ottawa, August 20, 2002 Government Receives Tribunal Safeguard Report on Imports of Certain Steel GoodsMaurizio Bevilacqua, Secretary of State for International Financial Institutions, announced today that the report of the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT), Safeguard Inquiry on the Importation of Certain Steel Goods, has been submitted to the Government. In its report, the Tribunal sets out reasons for its July 4, 2002, determination that five imported steel products have seriously injured the domestic steel industry: discrete plate; cold-rolled sheet and coil; angles, shapes and sections; reinforcing bar; and standard pipe. The report includes recommendations for remedial measures for these five products. Imports of four other products - hot-rolled sheet and coil, corrosion resistant sheet and coil, hot-rolled bar, and cold-drawn bar and rod - were not found to cause or threaten to cause serious injury. The Government will continue to closely monitor steel imports of these four products and, if significant trade diversion or unfair trade practices are detected, will act in accordance with multilateral and regional trade agreement obligations. The Government will examine the report and respond to the CITT recommendations soon. To access the CITT remedy recommendations, visit www.citt.gc.ca/Safeguar/index_e.htm ___________________
