Deputy Minister of Finance Announces Senior Management Changes

Revised on October 19, 2005 to add new second paragraph (in bold).

Deputy Minister of Finance Ian E. Bennett today announced that Mark Carney, Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance, will take on the responsibilities of G7 Deputy.

This assignment is an addition to Mr. Carney’s ongoing responsibilities with the department.

Mr. Carney replaces Paul Boothe, who is completing his Executive Interchange to the Department from the University of Alberta.

Mr. Boothe came to the Department of Finance from the University of Alberta, where he was a professor of economics. After pursuing undergraduate studies in economics at the University of Western Ontario, he earned his Doctorate at the University of British Columbia. He has also worked in the International Department of the Bank of Canada and as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board for the Government of Saskatchewan.

Mr. Carney previously served as G7 Deputy on an interim basis from January to July 2004. Prior to joining the Department, he was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada and Managing Director at Goldman Sachs Canada, where he worked in their Toronto, New York, London and Tokyo offices.

Mr. Bennett made special mention of Mr. Boothe’s contribution as Associate Deputy Minister and G7 Deputy. Mr. Boothe made tremendous progress moving Canada’s priorities forward within the G7, particularly with respect to African development. More broadly, his insights and hard work were invaluable to a number of important policy initiatives.
