Ottawa, February 9, 2000 Minister of Finance Announces Budget DateFinance Minister Paul Martin today announced that he will present the 2000 federal budget in the House of Commons at approximately 4:00 p.m. EST on Monday, February 28, 2000. The Minister noted that, as for past budgets, this budget may contain measures that take effect on budget day. In this event, such measures may be effective from midnight Sunday, February 27, the day preceding the budget presentation. The practice of proposing measures effective on budget day follows the procedure adopted in prior years and ensures uniform application of budget measures to transactions entered into on that day, wherever the transactions occur in Canada. This announcement provides appropriate notice so that interested parties can take this into account in planning their financial affairs. All Department of Finance publications are available free of charge on the Department's Internet home page at www.fin.gc.ca . These include the 2000 budget documents, which will be made available shortly after the tabling of the budget on February 28. Printed copies of The Budget Plan 2000 will be available at a cost of $26.75 (includes GST). Copies of The Budget Speech and The Budget in Brief will be available free of charge.
